Project Overview & Background
Tom Cubbage Photography represents decades of fine-art and evocative portrait photography by veteran Oklahoma artist T. L. “Tom” Cubbage II, whose work is deeply influenced by the landscapes and light of the American Southwest and Santa Fe.
The original web presence was established on October 2, 1997, making it one of the internet’s early independent photography galleries. Over nearly three decades, the archive accumulated extensive collections, workshop studies (including works developed with masters like Joyce Tenneson and Greg Gorman), and personal spiritual reflections.
The Challenge
Outdated Architecture
The legacy website was built during the early HTML/Dreamweaver era and lacked mobile responsiveness, fast loading speeds, and modern web standards.
Preserving Authentic Soul
The redesign could not simply erase the past. It needed to protect Tom’s personal storytelling, poetic quotes, spiritual reflections (such as Psalm 29:8), and 30-year digital heritage while upgrading the visual framework to contemporary standards.
Art-First Focus
The interface needed to act as a distraction-free digital gallery frame where photography remains the focal point.
Customer Collaboration & Discovery
To ensure the redesign honored the client’s creative philosophy, our team at Meta Creative Designer established an open, collaborative dialogue with Tom Cubbage:
- Understanding the Artist’s Vision: Tom’s guiding motto has always been “A quest for images that stir the imagination and emotions” and “Eyes are the gateway to a person’s soul.” We aligned every design decision with these core principles.
- Heritage Mapping: We cataloged the site’s historical milestones—from its 1997 inception through updates in the 2000s—ensuring the new design maintained clear continuity rather than feeling disconnected from its roots.
- Interactive Approvals: Through iterative wireframes and mockups, we worked closely with the client to balance modern aesthetic cleanliness with his unique narrative style.
Brand Identity & Design System
Why We Chose the Color Theme
Neutral Canvas (Deep Charcoal & Clean Whites)
Fine-art photography features nuanced tones, rich black-and-white contrasts, and vivid Santa Fe color palettes. A neutral, minimalist background prevents visual competition and gives each photograph maximum impact.
Subtle Warm Earth Accents
Delicate desert and warm-toned accents pay homage to Santa Fe landscapes, vintage film stock, and archival gallery mats.
High Contrast for Readability
Deep contrast ensures that the accompanying poetry, model notes, and biblical verses are legible across all screen types.
Why We Chose the Logo & Typography
Logo Concept
We crafted a refined, classic wordmark representing Tom Cubbage. It acts like an artist’s signature on an archival museum print clean, dignified, and timeless.
Typography Pairing
o Headings (Editorial Serif): Evokes literary depth, classic gallery catalogues, and traditional fine-art curation.
o Body & UI Elements (Geometric Sans-Serif): Provides effortless readability and seamless navigation across mobile and desktop devices.
